Staying Healthy Through Troubled Times
Staying Healthy Through Troubled TimesStaying Healthy Through Troubled TimesAdvice from mental health experts on how to cope through a prolonged job search.Being let go from a job is difficult under any circumstances, but in todays economy, it can be even more stressful. Mental-health experts and people who have been through the job hunt themselves offer the following advice for maintaining your emotional and physical health during what can be a prolonged job search.Exercise regularly.Eat a healthy diet.Maintain a regular schedule, especially when it comes to sleep.Stay away from anything that can dull your edge, such as alcohol.Dont try and go it alone. Connect regularly with other people, both in your professional and personal circles. If all of your connections were through your job, consider seeking out religious or community organizations.Make yourself useful. Reaching out to others during this time is one way to help you feel valuable - and valued.Limit your exposure to televi sion and the Internet. Sitting passively while consuming badeanstalt news is detrimental in many ways.Seek out free services in your community. Many people who have been working dont realize that there is a safety net out there, experts say - everything from the library to mental-health services. There are many things you cant control right now, so focus on the things you can how many resumes you send out, how many phone calls you make and so on.Dont put your eggs in one basket. If you pin all of your hopes on one perfect job, you have to start all over again if you dont get it.In fact, think outside the box. Your next job may not be the same - in function or in pay - as the one from which you were laid off.Count your blessings. There are worse things than losing a job. Try to be grateful for what you do have.

How I negotiated working remotely at a company that never allows it
How I negotiated working remotely at a company that never allows itHow I negotiated working remotely at a company that never allows itMany of us hit a point in our career when were ready for change. Be that a promotion or raise, industry switch, maybe a leap into entrepreneurship. But we all share the same bottom line - looking for an answer to the difficult questionWhats next for me?For some, working remotely or becoming a freelancer is just the transition he or she needs. With nearly 36 percent of the U.S. workforce working in remote or freelance roles, its no wonder that perceptions of freelancing as a career are becoming more positive (at least, 69 percent agreed to that in a recent study). And yet, the idea of transitioning into a remote role or asking for flexibility is paralyzing. Our fear of the unknown or of being told no holds us back from discovering our new potential. Im aya Im not the only one who secretly dreams about sitting at a cafe in Italy, cappuccino in hand, whi le answering emails for a job you love. But how do we get tzu siche? And this is exactly wherbeie Schuyler Blyth comes in.As a Merchandising Marketing Manager for an e-commerce marketplace, Blyth did the seemingly unthinkable She went from being a full-time, in-office employee to a contractor role working remotely in Europe. Not to mention - while leise working for the same company. Which up until Blyth, had very few employees working remotely outside of headquarters. In this interview, Blyth shares how she successfully negotiated this new scenario, manages her work schedule and budget, and what it really looks like to live abroad. Her advice will leave you feeling motivated to evaluate your career, and how you can ask for what you truly want. The major catalyst for me welches watching one of my best friends travel the world while working remotely as a graphic designer. She was on the road for a full year, but after only a few months I decided it was something I needed to do. Blyth r ecalls. I departureed looking for remote jobs, with fully remote companies, thinking that working remotely wouldnt even be an option in my current role. So when I approached my boss, nearly a year later, I was shocked she was willing to try it out. I was confident I would figure out a way to make it successful, but the amount of trust that must have taken on the companys end is enormous. The year-long build up for Blyth gave her the courage (and urge) she needed to confidently work with her boss to develop a schedule that would work best for her, the team, and ultimately, the company. We had a verbal agreement within a week or two, but it took a while to figure out the major logistics when I would leave, what hours I would work, how I would be paid, etc. My boss had worked remotely in the past and suggested that I transition into a contractor role. This would last for 10 weeks, and I would work 30 hours per week, leaving plenty of time for moped rides and gelato. After that, we offici ally set a resignation date, along with a start date for my new role, and my new life. Blyth explains. The freedom to go anywhere in the world was really exciting, but no matter where I was, I was still expected to work pacific time hours and hit all of my major KPIs. I have a very data driven role, and I was so thankful for that when going through this negotiation process, because we all agreed that with my job its very transparent if Im not performing.Living abroad sounds expensive, right? I was curious to know how Blyth was able to make it work financially, and what preparation she needed to do before jetting off. This transition from full-time employee to contractor did require a significant change to her salary, and the complete loss of benefits. For the first three months, she was able to live off of her salary without touching her savings, a success in-and-of-itself.Once I got the approval to go abroad, I ended my month-to-month apartment lease and and turned in my car. What I used to spend on those expenses was then transferred towards paying for Airbnbs and big city metro passes, Blyth explains. I did the math and my hourly contractor rate was what I would have been making had I been paid hourly all along, but I was cutting down by 15-20 hours per week. This resulted in about a $30,000 pay cut at the start. But at that point, I was thinking its just three months, I can make this work and it turns out I was able to live off of that just fine. I also knew that the pay cut would be worth it in order to live out my dream, and I havent regretted it once. After her first contract period ended, Blyth was ready to negotiate. Triple-negotiate, to be exact. She asked to extend her contract, for a raise, and for more hours. As Blyth remarks, asking to work remotely in the first place completely changed her outlook on negotiation. With practice, the confidence to ask for what she wanted got a lot easier. After the initial 10 weeks were up, I was hooked. I had never been happier, in both work and life, and I knew I wanted to continue. So I went back to my boss with a proposal. At that point Id proven that this could work, and that I could be successful in my role even if I wasnt at my desk. While I was confident in my ask, I was still a little nervous, and was genuinely surprised at how open they were to all of it. We ended up extending another 10 weeks, increased my hours to 35 per week and raised my hourly rate, Blyth explains. Going back to the beginning, I never would have thought, in a million years, that they would have let me do this. My biggest takeaway is just ask. If you dont ask for what you want, you wont get it, because no one else is going to ask for it for you, Blyth says.So now you may be thinkingHow can I do this, too? While learning how to manage her time and maintain a social life came somewhat naturally to Blyth, she does believe that it takes a certain type of person to successfully work remotely. There is a great amount of self-discipline required, because no one is going to be watching over your shoulder to make sure youre doing all of the things, and working the hours that you need to be. But with that discipline comes an exhilarating sense of freedom, Byth says. I dont start work until about 4 pm, to coincide with Pacific Time hours, so I have a large part of the day to spend how I please. The work-life balance is beyond anything Ive ever experienced with a 9-to-5. And then when it does comes time for work, I can work from almost anywhere the airport in Paris, a pub in London while watching the World Cup, on the rooftop of a riad in Marrakech, or by a pool in Santorini. Ive done all of them. Dont get me wrong, it can be really difficult at times, and and its definitely not always fun. But Im so thankful for this opportunity and committed to making it work, that the reward far outweighs the bad.Throughout the last few months, Blyth has begun to feel more confident, invincible. Her new lifestyle has made her more adventurous and open to new experiences, more free, and overall happier. Enough said, right? We can all learn from Blyths story - that if you genuinely believe in something, you can make it your reality. Simply mix a bit of confidence, courage, and commitment together, and your future will become all the more clear.By day, Lily works in geschftliches miteinander development for an online marketplace. How To Join There are two ways to join the U.S. Military enlisting directly after high school or finishing college first and joining as acommissioned officer. Though, you can still enlist after college if you prefer. A military officer is a leader who supervises and manages activities in nearly every occupational specialty. However, enlistment is the most common way to join the military as the officer corps is about 1/10 of the manning of the enlisted population. Military Enlistment/Reenlistment Document The Military Enlistment/Reenlistment Document is the contract signed by all individuals enlisting in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, including members enlisting in the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP), and enlisting in the National Guard and Reserves. The document, known as DD Form 4/1 can be found here. B elow is an excerpt from the document I understand that many laws, regulations, and military customs will govern my conduct and require me to do things under this agreement that a civilian does not have to do. I also understand that various laws, some of which are listed in this agreement, directly affect this enlistment/reenlistment agreement. Some examples of how existing laws may affect this agreement are explained in paragraphs 10 and 11. I understand that I cannot change these laws but that Congress may change these laws, or pass new laws, at any time that may affect this agreement, and that I will be subject to those laws and any changes they make to this agreement. I further understand that My enlistment/reenlistment agreement is more than an employment agreement. It effects a change in status from civilian to military member of the Armed Forces. As a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, I will be (1 ) Required to obey all lawful orders and perform all assigned. ( 2) Subject to separation during or at the end of my enlistment. If my behavior fails to meet acceptable military standards, I may be discharged and given a certificate for less than honorable service, which may hurt my future job opportunities and my claim for veterans benefits. (3 Subject to the military justice system, which means, among other things, that I may be tried by military courts-martial. (4) Required upon order to serve in combat or other hazardous situations. (5) Entitled to receive pay, allowances, and other benefits as provided by law and regulation. Make sure you THOROUGHLY read through the contract and if there is something you do not understand, have someone explain it to you. The last thing you want to do is sign a contract and you not get the job that you thought you were signing up for.

6 reasons getting fired was actually amazing
6 reasons getting fired welches actually amazing6 reasons getting fired was actually amazingFor a lot of us, losing ur jobs can be a crisis. Especially with so many people living paycheck to paycheck and elend having adequate emergency funds. For me, getting fired was actually amazing. And no, notgetting FIREdbut that will happen eventually I hopeFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraSome background this is not a recent or new development. My current job is still safe (for now, anyway), but Ihavelost jobs in the past. And even though it seemed like the end of the world for a short moment, I ended up learning some valuable lessons in the process.Yes, we all have bills to pay, and not being able to do so can be a real problem. That is even truer if you have a family to support we have to keep the lights on and put food on the table. These are non-negotiable responsibilities.Types of Nee dsEven beyond the biological needs, our jobs tend to dictate many parts of our overall well-being. IvementionedMaslows Hierarchy of Needsa couple of timesbefore. When you think about it, though, its true our jobs heavily influence many levels of the hierarchy.Image credit SimplyPsychology.orgTake a look at the figure above. From my perspective, the only needs our careers may not help are those of self-actualization. They still might, but that depends more upon the type of job you have. In other words, with self-actualization, its less about the money and more about what youre actually doing.Heres another one pride. For better or for worse, we could never be unemployed because we have too much pride. I tend to think of this as more of an American thing. Maybe Im wrong, but either way, we could never think of losing our jobs. That happens toother people, but never to me. Or so you think until one day, it does.In reality, it doesnt matter if you are laid off or if you get fired. At the end of the day, the end result is the saatkorn not having the steady paycheck you use to pay the bills.bedrngnis only that, but many of us are friends with our co-workers. And, as mentioned, being employed imbuesa sense of accomplishment. So how, then, could getting fired possibly begood?1. Getting Fired Helps You Find a Better FitAs I said earlier, we all got bills to pay. And since we consider this is a non-negotiable arrangement, we run the risk of doing a job we hate just to earn a paycheck. Some call it the reality of adult life. Me? I call it a pretty crappy deal.Ive always said I am doing a job I definitely dont love because it pays more than other jobs would. Sure, I might have been able to find a job I enjoyed more, but it probably would have paid less. And I wouldnt even consider that while working on repaying my debt since I was throwing money away on the interest.I feel slightly less obligated to earn excess income now though, mostly due to being debt-free now. Sure, Im a lso working toward FI, but at least Im no longer throwing money away.Long story short, I now consider it anoptionto make less money if it allows me to live a life I actually enjoy.2. Helps You Understand the Importance of Emergency FundsOne of the worst things that could ever happen is to have little to money set aside if things go awry.I would know it happened to me.Long story short (and believe me, its alongstory), I accepted a job for which I had no real previous experience. In retrospect, the entire process was a little suspect. The job was halfway across the country, and they couldnt pay to fly me in for an in-person interview. And trust me this organization has money. So I never even had the chance to meet them face-to-face. There wasnt even a video chat or anything like that. Well, it turned out it wasnt a good fit for me, and I got the boot. I was only there for a few months.Again, this was halfway across the country. I had no savings, so I had to move back in with my parents . Then, I had to take the absolute first job I could get. My old job had been eliminated, so it wasnt there even if I wanted it.I ended up taking a job that wasnt really what I wanted to do, and I was there for two years. All in all, this was almost two and a half years of my life that I felt was basically a waste. I did actually gain some somewhat valuable experience at the job I had for two years, but still. If I could do things over again, Idefinitelywouldnt have taken the original job without having a sizable emergency fund.Know your risk. If you are taking on significant risk (I was), have a significant safety net in placebeforeyou do.3. Gives You More Time for Side HustlingYou know what could be considered a side hustle? This blog Sure, side hustles are typically all about the $$$, and Ive made minimal income from it so far. Nonetheless, so far Ive worked on it, well, on the side. As I said, I am still working, but in an alternate universe, getting fired would give me more time to work on it.This might be more of a silver lining than a good thing of its own, but I see some real potential here. And because blogging takes so much time, having more of it can only be a good thing.Oh, and theres also freelance writing. Ive been trying to get into that for a while without a whole lot of success. But Im hoping to secure my first long-term freelance writing client in 2019.4. Forces You to Plan For the Long-TermI mean, other than this very obvious answer, Im not sure I have a good one. Not that a train full of puppers is such a bad goalBut seriously. Ive somewhat intentionally put off coming up with a long-term plan. And by that, I mostly mean where Im going to live and what kind of work Ill be doing.Ive bounced around to different places for different jobs, but I have to admit that Im starting to want to figure out more of a long-term plan. And being unemployed would certainly give me more time to do that.5. Gives You A Break From the MadnessMost people dont know this, but I sometimes get road rage. Add that to the voluminous list of reasons Id like to be a digital nomad, or at least live in a city where I can walk and/or take public transportation everywhere I go.I try to control my road rage, and most of the time Im successful, but sometimes it just happens. Not too long ago I actually got very flustered while driving home due to people driving exceptionally poorly. As a result of my frustration, I ended up scraping the side of the garage where I park. Its a one-car garage and very narrow, but I still think it wouldnt have happened if I had been less frustrated. At one point, it was decided that my co-workers and I would be allowed to work one day remotely every week. I cant tell you how happy I was just to get one day where I wouldnt have to deal with traffic.I can only dream of the absolute ecstasy I would feel if that became an everyday thing.6. Gives You More TimeThis is my belastung point, but also the ultimate one in a way.And it mig ht be obvious, but its true nonetheless.Did you know that Americans get a pitifully low number of vacation days? On average, we get 10 days off. And according to Gusto.com, a staggering 23% getno vacation at all. Thats in stark contrast to the several (mostly European) countries thatoffer 30 days on average.Having more time can allow us to do all kind of things we otherwise couldnt spend more time on a side hustle, make our homes more organized, spend more time with family, and so on.And, of course more time to look for a new job.Getting Fired A Blessing in Disguise? That is what I have often found getting fired to be.Dont get me wrong it may seem like the end of the world, at least for a time. But getting fired gave me more time. More time to plan, for side hustling, to find a better fit, and to get a break from it all. And, most of all, it gave me more time. There is no substitute for time. I may not always be the most efficient person with my time, but I do recognize its importanc e.So yes, in a way, getting fired was actually amazing. This article first appeared on Frugal Fellow.

We also offer external training through associations, professional trainers and online learning sources.Brian Gallagher, Vice President, ONeal, AtlantaBuild Your Employer BrandGood people are being taken care of at their current companies they have no reason to pick up the phone when a similar company gives them a call.
